Firewall Clustering

A firewall cluster is a setup where multiple firewall devices or instances work together to provide higher availability, scalability, and fault tolerance for network security. In this configuration, the firewalls are typically configured to work in tandem, often through a technique called clustering, to provide load balancing and failover capabilities.

Types of Firewall Clustering:

1. Active-Active Cluster:

  • All firewalls in the cluster are actively handling traffic.
  • This setup helps balance the load across multiple devices and improves performance.
  • If one firewall fails, the others continue to process traffic.

2. Active-Passive Cluster:

  • One firewall is actively processing traffic, while the other(s) remain in standby mode.
  • If the active firewall fails, the passive firewall takes over to prevent service disruption.
